Negative Approach

Negative Approach is an American band. They are considered one of the pioneers of hardcore punk, along with bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains and Black Flag. Formed in Detroit, Michigan, NA existed from 1981-1984, and now again from 2006-present. Like most hardcore bands, they were little known in their day outside of their hometown. They are now idolized in the Detroit underground and the punk subculture, considered to be one of the elite bands of the “old school” era, and continue to be influential.

NA’s brand of hardcore was savage and nihilistic, exuding frustration, alienation and rage. This was personified in the band’s vocalist John Brannon, an intimidating and intense young man with a shaved head, piercing stare and belligerent attitude. His vocal style and stage presence set the standard for those that followed. NA’s musical style was based on Detroit icons The Stooges, British punk rock (especiallyDischarge) and Oi! music (Blitz, 4-Skins, et al.), although from the start their sound and demeanor were considerably more aggressive and brutal than that of their influences.

Negative Approach was formed in August 1981 by John Brannon and Pete Zelewski, supposedly after seeing a Black Flag/Necros show. The first NA lineup consisted of Brannon on vocals, Rob McCullough on guitar, Pete Zelewski on bass and Zuheir on drums. Not long after, Zelewski left the band to form The Allied and was replaced by Rob McCullough’s brother Graham. Zuheir was later replaced by Chris “O.P.” Moore. The lineup of Brannon/McCullough/McCullough/Moore would remain unchanged until NA disbanded.

NA’s first gig was in the basement of Necros drummer Todd Swalla’s mother’s home. Soon after, they recorded a demo, and followed that up with an appearance on the Process of Elimination compilation 7” EP, released on Meatmen frontman Tesco Vee’s fledgling Touch & Go label, named after his fanzine of the same name. The comp also featured the Necros and The Meatmen, among others. NA, the Necros and The Meatmen then embarked on the Process of Elimination tour. Though this “tour” consisted of a mere three shows (Boston, New York City and Washington, DC), it is cited as being a key event in the early spread of hardcore.

The first proper Negative Approach studio release came in 1982 with their self-titled 7” EP, also on Touch & Go. It contained now-legendary songs such as “Can’t Tell No One,” “Ready To Fight” and “Nothing,” which is considered by many to be the quintessential NA song. The sound quality of the recording is average, but the performances themselves are powerful, and the record is now held in nearly universal high regard by hardcore fans.

The following year saw the release of the Tied Down LP, also venerated as a hardcoreclassic. While it mostly contains more of the same ultra-fast, angry music as the 7”, the band also branched out somewhat and included a plodding dirge (“Evacuate”) and a (relatively) mid-tempo rocker (“Dead Stop”) on the album.

The classic line-up fell apart in 1983 during their tour in support of Tied Down, playing their last show in Memphis.

Afterwards, Brannon assembled a new line-up with members Kelly Dermody (guitar), Dave (bass) and Mike (drums). This version of Negative Approach played a series of live shows throughout 1984 which featured some new songs, such as “Obsession,” “Tunnel Vision,” “Kiss Me Kill Me” and a cover of “I Got A Right” by the Stooges. This line-up can be heard on the Live at the Newtown Theater bootleg 7” and some live tracks recorded at Boston’s Paradise club that appear on the Total Recall discography CD.

It was announced in May 2006 that Brannon and Moore would play a Negative Approach reunion show, of sorts, for Touch & Go’s 25th Anniversary show on September 9, 2006, as well as two later shows in the UK - London on December 7 and at All Tomorrow’s Parties on December 10. Despite repeated efforts by Rob and Graham McCulloch to be a part of the reunion and have the classic NA lineup play, John refused; it was instead announced that Harold Richardson (of Brannon’s current band Easy Action) and Ron Sakowski (formerly of Easy Action, Laughing Hyenas, andNecros) would complete the lineup. Rob and Graham maintain that the appearance shouldn’t be labeled as Negative Approach without the classic NA lineup. The whole affair has generated controversy, and there is little agreement as to who is in the right and for what reasons.

Fury of Five

Forming in 1994, FURY OF FIVE are no strangers to NYC Hardcore. They’ve left their mark in clubs from Avenue A to 154th Street. However, FURY OF FIVE hail from New Jersey and are hand in hand with the other hardcore bands coming out of the neighboring big city. What makes this band so unique is their ability to attract the typical hardcore/punk kid with their street-level, fuck society lyrics coupled with skankable songwriting and the average metalhead through their proficient use of head-spinning, jagged riffs.

The band has toured extensively throughout the Northeastern United States and has two European tours under their belts. The aggression, mayhemand energy that exists at a FURY show is unsurpassed. ‘At War With The World’ was recorded at the reknowned Normandy Sound by Jamie Locke (Vision of Disorder, Madball, Obituary…).
FURY OF FIVE is the epitome of what today’s underground music scene needs- a brutally honest, in your face, hard-working band. If you like hard music and want the real deal, come and get some.

After all the sh*t that’s gone down. After all the crap that’s been said. The rip offs, the beat downs, the lies, the f#c*ed up promoters, the broken promises, the record companies… Here it is FURY OF FIVE. “This Time It’s Personal”. This is the group that never compromised and never ever backed down. With FURY OF FIVE at any moment it could go off big time. A look, a stare, an attitude… see ya pal. I hope your insurance is paid up. Being addicted to chaos and anarchy myself I knew that I had to manage this band from the first day I met them. Self destruction was eminent, it was really just a matter of time. But in the end who really gives a f%ck. We went around the world and had some good times and that’s really where it’s at. This is the band that took no shit (Or what they thought was shit) from anybody. Whether you were in a band (especially if you were in a band), a bouncer in a club, or just an everyday fool who can’t keep your mouth shut your @$$ would get fu*k%ng taxed. It kept things lively - that’s for sure. But when you live by the sword of course you die by the sword as well. In the end all of Fury’s violent exploits painted them into a corner. There was just nowhere to go. It’s hard to be a band when clubs don’t want you to play since you put a bunch of their bouncers in the hospital. So there you have it. This could be the final document of the legendary New Jersey based band FURY OF FIVE… so enjoy it!… Or else!

Fall

Well fall is here. That means a few things: Weather gets colder, leafs change color, girls dress as slutty as possible for one day and.......THE MISFITS! Fall is the perfect time to listen to The Misfits or Samhain or Danzig. All three bands feature one of the best singers/songwriters.....Glenn Danzig.

The Misfits were one of the best punk rock bands to ever form. They started in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey. The band has a very weird history. The real Misfits died long ago in 1983 when song writer and singer Danzig left the band. The band still tours to this date with out Danzig, Jerry Only being the only original member left. So for download I'm going to up every good Misfits release, all the Samhain releases that I have, And a lot of Danzig. Enjoy!

Dominic Mallary

For those that don't know who Dom is, he was the singer of the Massachusetts hardcore band, Last Lights. Dom passed away at the age of 24, of a brain aneurysm. Last Lights was quickly becoming one of the most popular, and best bands in hardcore. Dom would've been 25 today. Take it easy brother and happy birthday. Never forget. RIP

The Fartz

The Fartz (pronounced “the farts”) was one of the first well known Hardcore bands from Seattle, Washington. Their 1981 7” “Because This World Fuckin’ Stinks” was originally released with a pressing of 500, on Fartz Records. In 1982 they released a LP entitled “World Full of Hate” on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles Records. Vocalist Blaine Cook later went on to sing for the hardcore/thrash band The Accused. Their original drummer, Loud Fart left the band to return to his preferred instrument, the guitar.Their second drummer Duff McKaganlater gained notoriety as a member of the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses. Also, featured Tommy Hanson on guitar, later founding member of the band Crisis Party, Later, Paul Solger took over as the guitarist. They reunited to play shows in Washington and surrounding states from the late 90s till around 2003.

Band rules plain and simple. This is a style of hardcore that needs to be played more.

Show Reviews.

Alright some time during June I went to see: Ceremony Paint it Black Crime in Stereo Title Fight and some other bands who I don't care about. This show was on the south shore of Long Island, so Nick, Matt, Ryan, and myself made the two hour plus drive out there. However, we were rejected entrance. Matt was the last one let in. Fuck you Matt. So after Ceremony's set on Long Island we booked it to Brooklyn. Reason? Ceremony Paint it Black after party/show. We got there mad early so we walked around Brooklyn for a bit. Now the show it self was wild. Paint it Blacks set was one of the tightest, most enthusiastic sets I've seen. Ceremony's set was kinda lacking but whatever. Good show non the less.

Coke Bust, Bloodtype, Sick Fix:

On July 2nd me, Matt and Ryan went down to New Brunswick to catch Coke Bust's tour kick off. It was at this guy Rich NJ's new house, I think. Side note, Rich NJ is in Stressed Out who just released a split with my good friends Rip It Up go buy it and catch them on tour. Okay, back to the show. Bloodtype was the first band to play, this was their second show. My good friend George plays guitar for them, and they fucking ripped. Fast pissed off straight edge hardcore. The demo rules. These guys are gunna get big. They also covered Cro-Mags which is always fun. Sick Fix, a girl fronted band were rad. Reminded me of His Hero is Gone a little, ehh. They covered Project X. Coke Bust fucking killed it. They were really loud and tight. Great drumming. Over all a good show. Saw a lot of friends.

Tragedy,Mourne,Blacklisted,Brain Handle, Brain Killer:

I was lucky enough to get to see Tragedy, one the best HC punk band and one of my favorite bands, play with Blacklisted another favorite of mine. The show started off with Brain Killer who played a good set. The punk were diggin' it, They were pretty good, bought a 7 inch. Brain Handle was after them and they sucked balls. The singer had no stage presence and was extremely awkward. Blacklisted was after Brain Handle , and BL nailed it. They played a good long set of old an new songs. George was moshing around on stage and doing some weird dances. Amazing set, amazing band, can not wait for the new record. Mourne was after Blacklisted. Didn't catch most of their set. But from what I did they were really good, but were really boring. They're epic crust I guess? They were whatever. I was just excited to see the next band.....TRAGEDY! Watching them set up I had the biggest smile on my face. I was hoping, praying that they would open up with " Conflicting Ideas" but they didn't. Loudest set I've heard. Also best, and tightest. They played with such ferocity. Not speaking in between songs, lead singer and guitar player Todd Burdette, only spoke to say the names of each song. After their set the audience roared for an encore. Yet, being the punks they are Tragedy didn't give us one.

I'll do the Punch reviews later. Sorry for any spelling errors and shit running on no sleep and one cup of coffee.
Any ways I'm gunna be putting up some good NJxHC soon. Keep your eye's peeled! Ifyou have any requests lemme know!

Void/Faith

Void was an early 80's hardcore punk band closely linked to the Washington D.C. scene but actually hailing from nearby Columbia, Maryland. Often credited as one of the first bands to successfully fuse hardcore and heavy metal, this was mostly due to guitarist Bubba Dupree's unique playing style that somehow managed to merge the reckless abandonment of punk with the technical riffing of metal. One of my favorite bands out of the 80s.

Faith formed as a four piece in the summer of 1981 and featured Alec Mackeye on vocals, former vocalist for the Untouchables , as well as Michael Hampton of State Of Alert on guitar. After recording a demo, the band released a split LP with fellow D.C. hardcore band, Void. It was released by Dischord Records, a local independent label founded by MacKaye's older brother and Minor Threat vocalist, Ian MacKaye. It featured the song "You're X'd," which addressed the straight edge philosophy popularized by Minor Threat and S.O.A.

This is one of the best splits to ever come out. Void is one of the best hardcore bands period. Here the Faith/Void spilt.

Void/Faith Spilt

Poison Idea

So haven't posted in a while...... Mosh. Go check out my friends in Myspace.com/xripitupx. They're going on tour soon should be rad. So I've seen some pretty rad shows lately. I saw Tragedy and Blacklisted play together. Tragedy is the loudest band I've ever seen. They played with such and intensity and ferocity, never speaking between songs just spitting out the names. Saw Punch(who fucking rule) both friday and saturday.
The show Friday kinda sucked cause all the bands but Punch and Nomos sucked. Saturdays show was amazing. Relics,
The Seperation and the other bands killed it!

For your listening pleasure heres Poison Idea's "Pick Your King".

Poison Idea was formed in 1980 by vocalist Jerry A. (aka Jerry Lang). The initial lineup consisted of Jerry A., Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts (guitar), Glen Estes (bass), and Dean Johnson (drums). Inspired by Black Flag and other early Southern California hardcore acts, they were further influenced by Discharge and Los Angeles’s the Germs. Germs singer Darby Crash was a strong influence on singer Jerry A.—vocally, lyrically, and philosophically—was monumental, and Poison Idea followed the Germs’ extremist punk ethic.

This is one of the best hardcore punk bands you'll ever hear. Their 1983 "Pick Your King" release is one of the best records of all time. So enjoy it.

Touche Amore

This band, Touche Amore is fucking amazing. This demo blew me away. They have a full length coming out on 6131/Collect Records.Be sure to check this band out they are so good! They're from Los Angelas, California. Not only is the music great, the lyrics are beyond good.
"I'm losing sleep
I'm losing friends
I've got a love hate love
With the city I'm in
I'll count the hours
Having just one wish
If I'm doing fine
There's no point to this
" Thats a qoute from their song "Honest Sleep", that qoute perfectly describes how i've been feeling as of late. So for your pleasure i've uploaded their '08 demo for you to download.

Crucifix

Crucifix was a classic American hardcore punk/d-beat band from San Francisco who were active in the early '80s. Though graphically and lyrically they were similar to UK anarcho-punk bands of the time, they played fast, high-octane hardcore a la Reagan Youth, which many peace punk bands that followed would eventually cite as a major influence.
Members Matt Borruso and Chris Douglas were later in New York band Loudspeaker and vocalist Sothira Pheng went on to form Proudflesh. Crucifix fucking slays. Check em out!
And expect to see more posts. Got a shit load of new music im just diein' to give out. Mosh most in your bedroom.

Iron Age

Iron Age is a really rad Hardcore band from Austin Texas including members of Far From Breaking. In the vein of Leeway, Cro-Mags and other early 90’s crossover. They released their first demo tape on vocalist Tarpey’s Next Level label and followed with the full-length “Constant Struggle” on Youngblood Records, and the “Butcher’s Bill” 7” on Lockin Out Records, all in 2006. 2008 saw the release of the very garagy sounding “Burden Of Empire” 7”, self released by the band, the “The Way Is Narrow” tape once again on Next Level and the 7” version on Painkiller Records. The new full length “The Sleeping Eye” goes on sale May 11th, and will be put out by the new label Cyclopean Records first as a 2xLP gatefold record.

Charged... G.B.H.

This band came out of england in the early 80's and helped to lead the hardcore punk movement across the Atlantic. The band's name was originally just GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm) until they found out that another band had already taken that name. Spontaneously they added "Charged" their title to make it their own. The band has had great success in and out of the British Isle's, traveling on several occasions to other countries to tour. While many of the early british punk band's crossed over to the post-punk genre in the late 80's, GBH held true to their roots. Incorporating some metal riffs to their genuine punk rock sound. The band still tours, despite rumors of a break up, with a strong following in England and other parts of the world.

Cro-Mags

This band really doesn't need an introduction. Yet, seeing as how they have such an interesting and intense past I'll provide you with one. The 'Magz past is one filled with agony, pain, despiration, and hope. The two founders John"Bloodclot" Joseph, and Harley Flanagan formed the band in 1982 on the Lower Eastside of NYC, where the two were licing at the time. They released their most famous record " The Age of Quarrel" in 1986. After that the band seemed to fall apart with the depature of their singer Jon Joseph. The departure was due to inner band fighting, Jon had enough of Harleys and Parris' attitudes, as he explains in his autobiography The Evolution of a Cromagon(great read). Though, in '92 the band saw the return of their MIA singer. They recorded "Alpha Omega". Jon explains in his book that he returned for this album cause he was promised money(I think) and because he was under contract and if he wanted to be free to do, and release other musis he had to. So I'm going to upload The Age if Quarrel for you folks. This album is the defintion of hard.

Cro Mags- Age of Quarrel

Fall of Efrafa

Fall of Efrafa are from Brighton, United Kingdom. They mix elements of post-rock, post-metal, black metal and hardcore punk- taking influence from bands such as Neurosis, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Wolves in the Throne Room, and His Hero Is Gone.

The name refers to an element from the book Watership Down, in which Efrafa is a fascist state ruled over by a dictatorship. The band uses “Efrafa” to represent the reign of man over this planet, Owsla (the name of the band’s debut album) representing the natural world. The band is a concept project, based not only around the Watership Down mythos, but also on their strong atheist/vegan principles. They plan to release a trilogy of records known collectively as “The Warren of Snares”: Owsla (guardian), Elil (enemy), and lastly Inlé (death). The latest installment is Elil, a three song, 65 minute album. The band have received a lot of praise for their music, both for the concept surrounding the band - a mix of mythological language and imagery amidst anti-religious, animal rights ideologies -and the music itself, although fans are often divided when pigeon holing their sound.

The band is staunchly DIY, but manage to sidestep specific labels by incorporating a mixture of disparate post rock and avant garde/folk black metal passages, and hardcore punk influences. Although they have completed various tours and shows, They rarely play live, spending most of their time writing and recording. They plan to break up after the release of their final record, Inlé.

eye for an eye

One of my favorite bands, in my opinion one of the best bands in hardcore is Blacklisted. Blacklisted is a hardcore band from Philly. They're on DEATHWISH RECORDS. One of the best record labels in hardcore. They've released to my knowing three full lengths: We're Unstoppable, The Beat Goes On, and their latest and best release Heavier than Heaven, Lonelier than God. You can pick up any of Blacklisteds releases from their page in the DEATHWISH E-STORE. They are currently recording for a new release, i think. So I'm uploading a live WERS set by Blacklisted since everything else by them is still in print.

Yo sucka! You got a big mouth.

The Gorilla Biscuits are one of the best straight edge hardcore bands ever, forming in the late 80's in New York. The bands name was ironically based off of a type of Quaalude pill commonly found in NYC at the time, a "Gorilla Biscuit". The band released their 7" s/t and was a quick hit. They soon recorded their full length LP "Start Today" yet never released anything else before disbanding in 1991. Since then, "Having a Great Time...Wish You Were Here", was released. This album was a recording of the band's last show and feature's 'Distance' a previously unreleased track. Download all this shit... Seriously one of the best bands..

Help me somebody help! cause im fuckin fallin' down again!

Kill Your Idols was a hardcore punk band from Long Island. They were influenced by bands such as: Black Flag,The Descendents, Poison Idea, Negative Approach. The band started in 1995 and ended in 2007. Many say Kill Your Idols are one of the best bands to ever hit the hardcore punk scene and i agree. Kill Your Idols official last show was shut down by the feds, for having to many people in the venue. So they moved the show to the parking lot of a Long Island rehearsal studio.

Depressions got a hold of me

Title of this pretty much sums up this post. This is obviously a post about black flag. the flag formed in 76 in L.A. They broke up in 86. They had i believe four different singers the first being: Keith Morris who went on to form the infamous Circle jerks. After Morris was Ron Reyes. After Reyes was Dez. Dez would later switch to playing second guitar in 81 after they found their fourth and final singer Henry Rollins from D.C. the former singer of the D.C. band S.O.A

So for your listening pleasure here is Damaged by Black Flag.

first post

This is a blog about a few things mainly:hardcore-punk and rap.

For the first post i'd like to bring it back to the 80's! This video is by a band many of you may know and love... YOUTH OF TODAY! Youth of Today was a straight-edge hardcore band formed in 1985 by singer Ray Cappo and guitarist Porcell. Porcell not only played guitar for YoT but for other straight edge power house bands of the 80's such as- Judge, Bold, and Gorilla Biscuits. He was also the singer for the band Project X.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFUqrzCZOuo

^ theres a link to the music video for the song"no more".

Ray Cappo- A time we'll remember(spoken word)
